I am fascinated with the world of relief sculpture. Exploring it during my BFA studies made me start, and never stop since. Something about its minimalism, in space and in depth while portraying something bigger, felt like it is the language of my soul.

I am intrigued by folds of fabric, wrinkles, the softness of the flesh, the place where the skin is stretched over the bone, the way the light and shadows are holding a three-dimensional body, the illusion of depth and how to portray it all in ceramic.

The journey to find new ways to express myself through my body is never ending. It resonates with my own journey throughout life. I feel that the deeper my own journey gets, the more subtle my works becomes, to the extent that I may not have the words to express their deep intention, it is more of a sensation.

In my process, I take pictures of myself in different positions. Observing the images I try to find an image that reflects a specific moment, physically or emotionally. Sometimes browsing through the images, an unintended image finds me. The images that I cannot explain with words are the strongest images to work with.
It’s impossible to connect the dots looking forward, they connect only when looking backwards.

After choosing an image to work with, I decide on the scale. Most of the times the scale will be smaller to some extent. For me it’s an essential part of my process, it clarifies that I sculpt from observation, and it connects me to a long line of artists, who were working centuries before me.

The sculpting process starts from a ceramic tile. I start sculpting into it, first forming the outlines of the image, and step by step falling into the details. Sometimes the details are very subtle, almost like a drawing or a sketch, and sometimes parts of it are almost three-dimensional themselves. It is my way to illuminating certain parts and blurring others.

Using figurative image is a crucial part of my expression. I feel through my body, and I believe this is how the viewer connects to my work. While seeing the body posture a process of decoding starts almost automatically. We begin to see ourselves in the same position, in our body or in our minds, and a true sense of the work, a felt sense rises from our body. The felt sense is the essence of the work.

The art process is a healing process. The ability to take an experience in life and represent it through images, frozen moments, helps release the story they hold, and transform it to an archetype that resonates to a core human intention. When it is showcased and the viewers can relate to it, it becomes their own healing process, and in a deeper sense, a healing for them. This is the true essence and the power of art.
